Mochi has it! Xira mentioned that most of his spells are magically "uninteresting" and that you could be looking right at him and still miss the casting. Tareth wanted to see, so they had a chance to try it with this mind-reading spell!

While I'm always interested in Sev's shapeshifting shenanigans, this makes me wonder if turning everyone into Muulorns would actually be as unobtrusive as he thinks. Have any other runewriters tried this approach before? Do the locals already know what signs to watch for? Even if the crew looked and smelled correct, would it still be obvious that they were a bunch of Muulorns with human mannerisms/body language, wearing human clothes (or feeling awkward while NOT wearing them), speaking in various human accents through mouthfuls of unfamiliar teeth?
(Also, what is Sev actually doing there in the background?)

BUT YEAH, being turned into a muulorn wouldn't mean you magically know all the correct ear and tail movements needed to not commit several faux pas (paws?) so it would definitely be a VERY IFFY SOLUTION if actual interactions were involved. xD

For people that don't think in sentences and instead think in pictures, symbols or abstract/otherwise equally inaudible associations instead, wonder how this spell would be rendered?
I always expected that when mind reading, it would be difficult to tell one's thoughts apart from the thoughts one is reading. Since after all, we don't usually have voices in our heads when we're thinking. It seems like picturing an audible voice track to voice thoughts in our heads would be deliberate, not automatic.

Personally, I don't really imagine Xira as "hearing" the thoughts he picks up on! It's less that people think in audible words and more that these are the meanings he's picking up on.
though as far as telling them apart, I actually think people's thoughts would have a distinct Feel, and you can tell when a thought Feels like someone else's! (Part of the reason Xira's suggestion spell tends to be in first-person rather than second-person is to imply that he feels like your own thoughts instead of an outside source).

I don't quite understand what's meant to be happening in the last two panels? Is that thought bubble hers or Zira's?
Also is he performing a trick for her or is he casting the mind-reading spell he mentioned to Sev, and if yes, why is she supposed to be looking at him?
