I feel like it would pretty much take half a second of asking "wait how can you hear h---- oh, wait no, silly question, nm" to work it out. Sev isn't good at thinking things through, but he's also known Tareth for way longer than the others!

I'm guessing that, since he's not reading their minds, Xira's approaching because he can only hear half of the conversation.
For that matter, was anyone else there when Tareth and Æmber started talking? Like, do any of them actually know they can talk to each other without writing? I seem to remember it only being them two.
