Man oh man! Re-reading the comic is so enlightening!
Remember that Jonan wanted to come alone? He would be so dead by now.
And do you remember how Jonan just stared his way into town? Now that we learned about his previous visitation, no wonder the guards were so frightened.
Also I realized that this city wasn't even their main destination. That healer didn't look like half-muulorn anyway...
