If I were DMing that game I would need you to roll some pretty high IRL diplomacy checks to convince me that you could rouse the spirits of your comrades by signing at them! But then again dancing is similarly baffling to me, and if I were DMing this game I would NOT be letting Severian get away with his put-runes-on-my-skin exploit.

RE: Tareth being a "bard," I actually think you could pull it off, but you'd need a house rule. Specifically, that she could "sing" in sign language... which would require concentration and keeping her hands occupied, meaning she couldn't really do anything else... which seems pretty close to how bards are handled, anyway... just thinkin'...
