I was staring at the drawing because it probably means -something-, trying to remember whether we'd already seen those symptoms, and I realized that that girl looks a lot like the mystery person from the end of chapter 1 (or 2?) who also looks like the one who made Jonan miscasts.
(Oh, I know! that's because there is only one design for all characters that we either don't see well or don't see in the present time and totally not because that character is important)
I wonder if the ritualists know her.
Maybe she's the reason magic went wrong! (what with her exhuding dark steam-goo)
Maybe she was a ritualist, and one of her rituals went wrong, and that's why the ritualists seem to know a bit more about what's happening than the rest of the people. Huh, does she have the tatoos? I don't remember having seen them, but maybe they were just hidden. (maybe she did rituals without being a ritualist)
I wonder what she wants.

Maybe I’m looking at it wrong, but what you called “goo” looks exactly like a tree growing from their chest to me. Also, the rib cage is exposed, so I don’t know how you can tell that that is in fact a woman. I’m not sure which character you are referring to because all I can see is their white, shoulder-length hair. Maybe more will be revealed on next week’s page. Waiting a whole week to find out what happens next is a bit agonizing. (Figuratively speaking, of course.)

The character in question is on pages 2.33 ad 2.34, in Jonan's flashback - the girl who robbed him.
She's also on page 4.9!
The hair is pretty distinct so I can see the link.

Errrrrrrrrr NOPE!
So there are trees coming out of that decaying corpse with familiar hair (if that's hair, I mean, it could be a hood?), clearly that must mean... Nope, I got nothing. This was a very unexpected turn of events. First it was sweet, then it was eerie, and then it was THIS?!
He's a good painter, if that's a paintbrush? Is he even awake right now? So many questions, so little answers.
We know that white-hair woman from pages 2.33 and 2.34. They HAVE to be the same person, or my mind will be blown. We also know that she's able to cast a spell which reflects runewriters' spells. We also know that there's been an 'incident' in the Agorath Order which Esra believes is connected to runewriters becoming 'tainted'. And tainted runewriters are apparently a new thing. I feel like all this must be connected to that woman somehow.
She probably isn't a runewriter herself because her hair is all one colour, and she has the ritualist mark on her hand. But she doesn't have it all down her arm like Quentin and the magician have shown. I don't know what that means - that higher ranks have more tattoos? We haven't seen Esra's arm or any of the ritualists', so I don't think we have that confirmed yet. I'm very curious about that right now.
Would more tattoos allow access to more rituals, or are they just a mark of rank?
Another thing I find interesting is that the white-haired woman seemed to have a ritual or rune marked on her back (and possibly chest as well), which I assume she was able to use to deflect Jonan's spells. And what was she stealing from him?
I don't even know why I'm publicly asking all my questions, Shazz is too clever to even glance over them. :) Just consider this elaborate indirect flattery, Shazzbaa, because your comic is making me think very hard. :/

Omg no you do not need to apologise for long comments!! THESE SORTS OF COMMENTS THAT ARE PUTTING PIECES TOGETHER ARE SO COOL AND I READ THEM ALL AND CHERISH THEM SO MUCH and so its a shame that I can pretty much only respond with some sort of ambiguously coy smiling emoticon so as not to give anything away.

Wow, the artwork in that last panel is AMAZING! The lighting, the colors, Agorath's shadow on the wall... And the painting is weirdly creepy and beautiful at the same time. (Thanks to commentators who pointed out that the shape coming out of the person's body looked like a tree, as at first glance I thought it was just some twisted smoke coming out of the corpse.) (I also wasn't looking too closely at first because of the creepiness factor!)

Oh boy, I sure am excited about this chapter where we see the adorable functional side of Quentin and Esra's relationship and for once nothing horrible comes along to interrupt their what the heck is that.
...On further consideration, I am now equally excited about this chapter about creepy haunted sleep murals, because this kind of juxtaposition is one of the main reasons I love Runewriters so much in the first place.
(I'd also like to echo some of the other commenters in saying that the lighting and panel compositions this chapter have been unusually gorgeous, even for this comic, which is a pretty high bar already.)

That is sooo sweet!! I mean, the jacket thing, not the drawing one, that is kinda scary. I mean, we have seen her twice and she has the mark that Esra and the ones in the organization also have, so maybe she was some Sortiar or ritualist that went too far, or that was chosen to experiment something that went out badly... I mean, there are a lots of possibilities!
