Dude! That's awesome. I'm totally going to take credit for that as though it was intentional.
Uh, I mean, because it totally is.

Wow, and there's at least two other runewriters right out of the gate! I wonder what the odds of that happening are?
Anyway, it's really interesting seeing the different ways the three of the react here: Severian's enthusiastic and bubbling with excitement as usual, Jonan is all "I'm just waiting for the hour this is all over" with a shade of been-there-done-that, and Tareth's very natural fear of being in a strange city blended with the anxiety of being separated from someone familiar with her circumstances. Her suggestion really says a lot about what she's feeling.
Fat chance though, Tarri =D

one would think that runewriting would be a fairly significant economic edge, as long as there isn't too much in the way of prejudices against them. I mean, they have all the regular facilities of an ordinary human plus the innate ability to sling around some kind of magic. Affluent/economically active people tend to congregate where they have access to trade -> here being cities
posted at 11:13pm on April 1st, 2013
I suppose that would depend on the applicability of their runewriting magic to the problems that presented themselves! Jonan lives kind of off by himself because of his necromancy stuff, and I bet that certain types of runewriting would make people verrrry nervous.
Also - does the runewriter in the second panel on the right have EPICALLY HUGE glasses? If so, they're of Agatha Heterodyne proportions! I kind of want to see that character from the front now...

Hahahahahaha that summary is basically 100% accurate. And Tareth has totally never seen a city this big.
Regarding runewriting and affluence, yeah, you guys pretty much have it. It kinda amuses me that the sort of abilities you most want to have as a D&D character are often the least practical in the real world. I mean, so few people like to play clerics, but if you're a healer WOW YOU SUDDENLY HAVE A PRETTY NICE JOB SET UP. Whereas if you can sling fireballs or raise the dead into a shambling mockery of life, um, that's nice, please do that way the heck over there.
(and yeah I have a weakness for huge glasses. THERE WILL BE MORE IN THE FUTURE I'M NOT GONNA LIE)

This pleases me. Moar glasses. GLASSES FOR EVERYONE!

Ohmigosh Necropony is so cuuuuuute. I mean, for a decomposing dead corpse. How you make a zombie pony adorable is beyond me.

Agreed, Tama! Awesome print, Shazz!

Thanks guys!! Adorable zombies are the BEST and there just aren't enough of them.

You know, some people would probably buy that print. XD

I SURE HOPE SO, that's the plan! :"D

Guys. Guys. You're missing the mental image of Sev and Jonan holding hands - er, hand-and-tentacle! Goosh!
And I can understand why Tareth would make that suggestion - if they got separated, she can't hear them calling for her. Everything has to be line-of-sight, and that would be hard.
Another great page, Shazz! :D

Yeah Jonan doesn't approve of this at all.
But ahhh thank you very much! *u*

How long have they been traveling so far? (Though I'm sitting here imagining wind and sun whilst flying, and getting the feeling that dehydration proceeds a bit quicker than popular wisdom says in that environment...)
Anyways, love the page! Got to feel bad for Tareth... maybe she can convince Sev to let her hold on to his sleeve, at least, even if they can't drag Jonan in to it. (I almost said hold her hand, but, um, tentacles... xD)

(I'm also just going to point out that Jonan doesn't really strike me as the type to be strong of constitution, haha).
But depending on whether you interpreted them leaving as being night or early morning, they've been travelling either an evening or a full day. I was shooting for a full day!

(Oh gosh that's probably true. On top of that he seems like the sort of person to ignore things like meals when they don't quite sync with what he's wanting to do at the moment... ^^;)
Okay. I was thinking it was at least that long, especially considering the whole 'not sleeping' thing.
As another side question, is there any way to get updates when comments are replied to?

Alas, not currently! I get notified of every comment, and I've considered providing the option to others in the past -- if there's demand for it, that might be the next feature Flak and I try to work out!

You know that thing that when someone types "lol" they usually are just kinda "meh"? Well, I'll have you know that I in fact laughed out loud at the vote incentive :D

Ahahahahaha awesome! Thanks! xD

That is one of the better poster ideas I have seen. It works on a lot of levels.

Ahhh thank you so much! I'm really excited about it!

Also, for serious - they SHOULD hold hands. Tareth can't find them by listening for their voices, and she's too short to see over the crowd. This would be a scary fucking situation for most people, being in unaccustomed crowds under stressful circumstances, but for her it's very directly dangerous.
posted at 5:46pm on April 1st, 2013
But you're forgetting Sev's tentacle hands, which is the real source of the discomfort. XD

Oh my gosh! Fantasy Fanny Pack!
posted at 9:10pm on April 1st, 2013
"Yyyyyyeah how 'bout no." XD Tari, you're forgetting Sev's tentacle hands. Also the fact that these are two adult(?) men who don't like each other, and I'm sure even in THIS world it's not super kosher for dudes to hold hands on an outing.
And as for the vote incentive: YES
posted at 12:04pm on April 2nd, 2013
Random trivia: Sev would be just dandy holding another guy's hand if said guy wanted to! (and if Sev had hands.) Jonan meanwhile has a terrible case of the homophobia, symptoms may include insecurity and discomfort over the idea of touching another man.
(No one is surprised.)
posted at 10:17pm on April 3rd, 2013
Yeah, I gotta say, now that you've pointed it out, Sev DOES seem like the type of dude who just wouldn't care about stuff like that. 'Cause he's cool. (The guy runs around in a loincloth in all settings after all, although maybe that's just common of all shapechange runewriters and so that's why no one's ever surprised?)
posted at 10:43pm on April 5th, 2013
No, I think the loincloth is particular to Sev. The forefront runewriter in the second panel has green hair, meaning (s)he's a shapechanger too yet (s)he's fully clothed. Although I suppose there's the possibility (s)he shapechanges objects and not herself.

I am now laughing hysterically at the mental image of Sev and Jonan on either side of Tareth, all of them holding hands and skipping.
And I would buy that print if I had any spare cash at all. And probably even if I didn't.
posted at 12:11pm on April 2nd, 2013
Oh, the 3 of them, plus necropony prancing around town. The mental image is just... beyond my words
posted at 12:25pm on April 2nd, 2013
I'm just going to make that mental image better/worse by suggesting that Sev sing "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."
Which makes the necropony Toto, I guess?
...Jonan is the Tin Man, Sev is the Scarecrow (Sorry Sev, but it's true) and Tareth is the Cowardly Lion.
oops

Also I'm 99% sure this has already been discussed in comments SOMEWHERE
too bad it's gonna happen again

al;ksdjla;skdjfsd you guys I was gonna save Wizard of Oz comparisons for a vote incentive once everyone has properly joined the party (there are a couple of people we've yet to meet) but I think this is actually pretty fantastic because necropony as toto had somehow not occurred to me.
posted at 10:18pm on April 3rd, 2013
I TOTALLY ADVOCATE THIS
ALso Tari has to be Dorothy. But who would be the Cowardly Lion? I guess you could just do it as the scene before they meet him, though!
"Once everyone has properly joined the party" OMW THERE IS TOTALLY GONNA BE A COWARDLY LION CHAR ISN'T THERE
posted at 3:25pm on April 6th, 2013
Nooooo. No to print of vote incentive. T-shirt. T-shirt is yes.
Or both.

OH WOW THAT'S SUPER TEMPTING ACTUALLY
I guess I should figure out how to go about making t-shirts

Really like the circular arangement of the words in the second panel; it makes the order ambiguous. You could read it either way and it makes sense (starting or ending with 'holy crap'), and I keep mentally exploring it and feeling a bit lost, just like no doubt I would the city.
Anyway, just wanted to say that was cool and I've never seen that before.
