Lies and slander. The Jackrabit is pretty cute, though.

Heeeheheehehe thanks guys! He's fun to draw. *u*

"You looked pretty upset"
Uhumm... "looked" huh?
I still don't really trust him >_>
posted at 7:06am on May 27th, 2013
To be fair to him, he looked like he was gonna explain before Li'l T cut him off. That said, I'm always immediately cautious of people who think mental eavesdropping is in any way good, polite or proper.
posted at 7:31am on May 27th, 2013
It's not clear that the eavesdropping is voluntary.
Granted, there are other reasons for you to not quite trust him, foremost of which is that he's a stranger. However, he's an outsider just as much as Severian at the moment, which makes me lean towards trusting his intentions. Remember the guard at the gate checking for "witches", who had to be "marked" before they came in? Yeah. This is not a friendly town for this runewriter.

Orrrr he could just be a good guy with a kind of magic we haven't seen yet. He does appear to be trying to he helpful, since he overheard her distress.
posted at 11:52pm on May 27th, 2013
Well, we have seen it *kinda*, I think? Iavin's eyes were glowing black like that before. But that doesn't mean they have the same powers and it definitely doesn't preclude him being a good guy-- I agree with Asterai: Dhemin is not a good place to be saying "hi I can read minds and stuff and I'm sure that'll make you feel very comfortable with me around" >A> I sure wouldn't advertise "freaky mind powers," as Sev called them, if I had them.
posted at 2:32pm on May 30th, 2013
Of course, the real reason he can't read the mind of his chocobunny is because using mind magic on animals violates part of their non-compete clause with the nature wizards.

Aww, this guy seems so nice! :D And I really like Hache. Giant rabbit with wings! So adorable!
posted at 10:04am on May 27th, 2013
I agree; Hache is the cutest thing. No, wait, Hache thinking in the last part of the vote incentive is the cutest thing, and if there was a print of it I would so buy it.

"i am big!"
Love it!
A vet could really charge the big bucks if he was a animal-thought-listener.
Of course, a horse-whisperer might say that most animals broadcast what they are thinking much the way Hache does in the bottom panels, so hearing their thoughts would be superfluous.
I am a bit surprised it is called a jackrabbit, since the only rabbit-ish thing is his head. But names are like that - often a silly not quite accurate term is what sticks.
It is flightless, like an ostrich?
Anyway, I vote you change its name to "mbuni".
Kind of a pun. Sounds like bunny, but means ostrich, if google translate Swahili is to be believed...
( Don't worry, I know this isn't a democracy. ;) )
Finally, about the actual comic: El Turbano doesn't seem malicious to me. Many guys will go out of their way to help a cute girl. And his relationship with Hache is a good indication of his personality. But only time will tell for certain...

Hahahaha, OH MAN I really like the pun!
My philosophy on naming animals has basically been the reverse version of Call a Rabbit a Smeerp -- despite these clearly not being normal animals, they all have pretty normal animal names. That crazy thing with all the tentacles at the beginning of the chapter is just called an "elephant."
I joke a lot that Varænskis are the most uncreative namers, but really it's how we've always named stuff, and I don't think that'd change if we ended up in a fantasy world. xD It's a sea creature shaped like a star? Okay, starfish. It's got stripes and lives in Tasmania? Tasmanian Tiger. It's not even feline? WHY WOULD THAT EVEN MATTER? It looks absolutely nothing like a panda bear, and isn't a bear, but also lives in China and eats bamboo? Red Panda. We're done here.
They travel in packs and glow? Okay, I don't care if they're sapient, have their own name for themselves, and aren't even canine. Moon Wolf. Bam.

Travel in packs and glow?
Well, I guess Moon Wolf has more cachet than Cigarette Butt.
Call a Smeerp a Rabbit. The anti-trope!
I think that is what you get when you cross an antelope with a Push-me-Pull-you.

I spat all over my screen. I wasn't even drinking anything. Hope you're happy now, you laugh-inducing machine. >:I

You've got to admit though that moon wolves do look like wolves - well as far as I'm concerned.

That's actually the same way that my dad dismounts his horse. Not technically the proper way, but less awkward than shimmying off on your tummy. Though Hache's neck is so much more vertical than a horse's usually is, you'd have to have pretty bendy hips to swing around that closely.
posted at 8:44pm on May 27th, 2013
Oh cool! GOOD TO KNOW HE'S NOT ALONE IN his dismounting style xD

...I do have one question. How do you design your clothes?
posted at 10:34am on May 28th, 2013
Oh gosh. This one's more an art than a science. Well, not so much an art as a "throwing a bunch of things together until it looks like it probably works." I take a lot of inspiration from actual things that I see that I think look cool and then fuss with it until it looks like it kinda fits in what I imagine the world being like? But clothing isn't my strong point so I don't DESIGN OUTFITS as much as some creators do. I'll admit my envy for the webcomickers who design new outfits for their characters every few scenes! I think it's super rad but that's a lot harder for me, haha.
posted at 9:17pm on May 29th, 2013
Haha okay! Makes sense really. I will say that it's pretty natural in your context for them to really only be wearing one or two outfits; traveling with too many would be a hassle!

Ooh, I just remembered. I need to donate to a charity that gives cattle to 3rd world farmers to get a really nice Runewriters wallpaper.
Wait, hold up. It's summer? And the wallpaper was only available till New Years!? Curse my general inattentiveness (and the screwy weather). Maybe if I plan months ahead of time, I won't forget.

YAAAAAY NEW CHARACTER 8D Of course he will be super important, he's helping Tareth AND he has an awesome pet/mount AND he got a vote incentive where he's talking to the audience. ALL OF THESE THINGS ADD UP.
I love him alreadyyyy. He's not only trying to help the lost girl, he's STILL trying to help the lost girl despite her yelling weirdly and being in general kinda weird. He may be my new favorite. (Which is saying something since he's been visible for all of two pages. BUT WE SHALL SEE)

(MAN THAT'S GOTTA BE SOME KINDA RECORD)
But ahhh thanks, I'm so happy you like him! I also really like that description of his interaction with Tareth. xD I'M EXCITED FOR THIS GUY SHOWING UP I'M NOT EVEN GONNA LIE TO YOU

Perhaps this was mentioned previously, but perhaps I missed it: what happens if the gate guards find a runewriter with psychic powers?
posted at 9:15pm on May 31st, 2013
This is all we've seen! They "get marked" and I believe that's as much as anyone's explained.

I don't know whether this question has already been answered or that I'm just a super derp and everyone already knows this, but I have a question...
Do runewriters or any kind of magickal people need to be born from runewriters/magickal people as well? Or are they just born randomly?
