Once again, Jonan demonstrates the value of having max ranks in Intimidate.

red tipped hair?

Mmm, the same color as Jonan. Means she's a Life runewriter, with some or all of [Healing, Death, Nature].

1. (?Does that?) seem strange to you?
2. Something (?weird?) is going on...

It really speaks to Jonan's character if him not exacting revenge on someone accidentaly knocking him over is considered weird and strange...

WOW I'M GLAD I DIDN'T WRITE GIBBERISH THERE
gosh, you guys constantly impress me with the looking for tiny details!!

Uh oh. It looks like Jonan's attracting attention... That the runewriter's immediate response to Jonan is "-no, please!" is certainly ominous.
I really like that runewriter's design! It's fantastic to see just how tiny Jonan is, and to note that although they may share runewriting abilities (at least categorically) that they don't share skin tone, body type, or (probably) temperament.
I wish there was a way to work in a joke about things "coming full circle" for page pi, but it doesn't seem to apply. Oh well.
Great page as usual! I'm looking forward to further installments.

Such a joke would have to be about coming half-circle. Full-circle doesn't occur until the Tau page, 6.28.
posted at 3:52am on April 23rd, 2013
Postulating that tau should be used is assuming that rational, logical, intuitive action suits this comic! ...I'll let you be the judge of that. :D
And to be honest, Shazz's colors usually trigger "delicious" as an adjective in my brain, so uh... that applies? Though now that I'm thinking about it I'd really love to know what the characters' favorite foods are!

You could work something in about how 'tasty' this page is?
posted at 6:22am on April 23rd, 2013
Aw, thanks! :"D I always try to have fun with the side characters, haha! And yes, Jonan is a scrawny little thing (though to be fair he's probably taller than everyone else on this page by a foot or more, so there's that).
I SHOULD'VE WORKED SOME PIE INTO THE PAGE, MAN. Or like... made a vote incentive about pie. Everyone except Jonan eating pie. I just didn't realise what page it was until I was updating! NOW I'M FILLED WITH REGRET AT MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

Perhaps now Jonan will get his just desserts!

I only now got that.

*reads vote incentive*
There's a couple divine spellcasting classes that use Charisma-based casting, but yeah, Tareth's skills seem more in line with NPC classes right now.
Although it would be nifty to have a PC who actually uses the Status spell...

Is it bad if I only just now realised that Jonan's hair is brown and not red? All this way along I had trouble understanding this hair colour thing. For the most part (up until a few pages ago) I totally mistook the brighter tip for shading.
Now I wonder what Sev's hair colour actually is? Because it looks green to me bright tip or not... *confused*
posted at 1:53pm on April 23rd, 2013
ps. So I'm glad for Ms. Blondie for 1 - demonstrating the contrasting ti and 2 - knocking the hood off Jonan.
posted at 1:54pm on April 23rd, 2013
Ahhhh sorry about that! I don't think it's bad -- since Jonan has it even in his eyebrows (unlike, say, Sev) you don't get anything to like... contrast what he'd look like without the tips. But nope! Every runewriter has normal-coloured hair with bright-coloured tips. The only one we've seen so fair that doesn't really work that way is Iavin, since he has black hair with black tips. You can only kiiiiiind of see it if you're looking for it.
But as for Sev -- Oh gosh, lemme see, I think there's some old progress vote incentives where you can see what colour it is before I add the tips....
Ah -- Here's one! It's just somewhere in between black and dark brown. c:

Thanks. now I'm officially colour-impaired. It still looks kinda very dark-green to me oops :D

Dang, Jonan DOES have a bad reputation. I wonder how many people he's used that whole mouth-sealing spell on?
Although seriously, girl NEEDED to be taken down a peg. SHE trip-splats into somebody and she's yelling at THEM for not looking where they're going? Srsly, grl.
posted at 2:10pm on April 23rd, 2013
(I kinda think the girl's a jerk, too. Jonan's just a bigger jerk.)
(Though to be fair I suppose she might've recognised Jonan as the only other Life runewriter in the area and likely owner of the zombie that just barreled in front of her.)
posted at 8:18pm on April 24th, 2013
Well, what with the rune-hair, she might have the same kind of ego as Jonan, just on a lower scale. Hard to say what she acts like when she's not groveling in front of an Alpha Zombiemaster.

Having a silent Jonan around is remarkably handy for intimidating people.

For the first 3 panels I was automatically thinking Miss Runewriter was an old flame of Jonan's (too many romcoms) but the rest of the page, not so much. At least I really hope someone who appears to be so much younger and so terrified of him isn't a former lover.
posted at 6:04pm on April 23rd, 2013
Hate to double post, but can someone please explain the perspectives in panels 6 and 7? No matter how I imagine the street and the people on it, it looks like Blue Vest Guy and Green Tunic Guy did a speedy switcheroo and changed places.
posted at 6:10pm on April 23rd, 2013
And now, of course, I can only imagine them getting up to some kind of hijinks and swapping places in a quick, square-dance type of move. ...I am not displeased with this mental image!
posted at 7:01pm on April 23rd, 2013
Yess. It's clear to me now; Blue Vest Guy and Green Tunic Guy aren't actually talking about Jonan at all! They're arguing over steps in a folk dance!
posted at 3:12pm on April 24th, 2013
Yesssss
"Scowl at the runewriter; grab that hand,
Spin around until you land
'Cross from the place you used to be!
Now sing this song along with me!"
(The caller's off page)
(I regret nothing)

Oh my goodness what have you people been doing while I wasn't looking
I ALMOST HATE TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY AT THIS POINT....
But they're different people that I accidentally put in really similar colours. xD The guy in panel 6 has a full beard and dark sleeves; the guy in panel 7 has sideburns, a collar on his shirt, and light sleeves. The guy in panel 6 is black and has long sleeves; the guy in panel 7 is the same ambiguously middle-eastern/indian race that Sev is and has short sleeves. I REALLY DIDN'T EXPECT THEM TO LOOK SIMILAR but oops then I put them in the same colours, hahaha
They'd also need to do quite a bit more than a simple switcheroo, since in panel 6 the two are behind Jonan, while the guys in panel 7 are behind the lady.
...But y'know, Death of the Author and all that. It might be more fun to imagine them dancing! I'll just go all Kung Fu Hustle on the comic from here on out, it'll be great.

That's because IT IS FUN TO READ ALOUD. It's just one of those awesome books.

I'm going to take this moment to point out in the incentive that even Necropony understands that his master is ETERNALLY GRUMPY because in his little thought bubble Jonan has the most intense frown
posted at 11:39am on April 25th, 2013
Well it's not like it's ever seen him SMILE before, is it? The poor man's face just stuck like that one day, just like mama told him it would.

In the vote incentive I'm not sure whether you meant D&D Online (because I love that game so damn much) or the board game (because I've never even seen what it looks like so dayum) but those statistics looked pretty much accurate.
On a side note, my stomach did flips when I saw the final panel. JONAN DON'T DO THAT WITH YOUR FOOT USE THE FLUTING CANE YOU ARROGANT DERP
posted at 8:55am on August 17th, 2013
Neither, actually! Both the MMO and the board game are based on the tabletop roleplaying game (which is the reason DDO has "Online" in the title to differentiate it), which is the original Dungeons & Dragons - the sorta famously geeky one where you sit around a table with character sheets and dice. It's one of my favourite things to play!
Last I looked, DDO remains pretty similar to the stats and mechanics of D&D, though, so you have the right idea. c:

Dude it sounds like so much damn fun >;< but I've never even seen it before. The board games I have are boring. No pun intended.
posted at 10:24am on August 19th, 2013
Hahaha! Well, the original D&D isn't a board game! If you're interested in finding out about it you'll actually have to look in the books section -- look for something called a D&D Players Handbook and start reading up on it, and you can get an idea of how the game works!

So, I keep coming back to this page - this exact page - because, despite the fact that Jonan CANNOT SPEAK, you can deduce EXACTLY what he's thinking and doing in every single panel, and it's simply a ludicrously masterful use of facial expression. Just... just wow.
It jives so perfectly with what we know about Jonan. Everything. This is a visual synopsis of his thought process, it's maddening.

YOU KEEP TRYING, NECROPONY. I BELIEVE IN YOU.
But aw, man, Jonan. Is it bad that I'm actually REALLY SCARED for him?? I'm just waiting for someone to figure out he can't cast and to plot something awful... :C Sev isn't the most reliable backup even if Jonan could/would call for help... :C
